Porsche 964

Andrew Barker ‘It's the ultimate sports car from my childhood – it's also pretty reliable’

  • Year: 1992

  • Mileage: 98,000

  • Acquired: 2011

  • Dream car: Carrera RS 964

Why this car?

The air-cooled sound when the vendor fired it up was fantastic. It was the ultimate sports car from my childhood.

What's the best bit?

The classic 911 silhouette but with enough reliability to be used as my daily driver year round. It took me to Stuttgart in December without fault. Doubling in value is also good news!

What's the worst bit?

It gets very warm inside on a hot day. The aircon has never been reliable.

What's it like to run?

Almost all parts are available and routine servicing is easy through the official Porsche network. For larger jobs I have always used Canford Classics in Blandford Forum, Dorset.

Advice for potential owners?

Buy on condition, not age or mileage. Although galvanised, rust can still appear in the sills behind the plastic side skirts and around the windscreen or rear window. Change the oil religiously every year.

Funny mishaps?

It would not start for a planned day of sightseeing on my girlfriend's first visit to England. We got it going eventually and are now happily married!
